Sound elements
Adding sound to art and design pieces has somehow always fascinated me, but being more visual orientated person I have rarely ended up using audio elements myself. What a stupid excuse, I know! However I must say that I’m very intrigued to use sound, since it brings a totally a new level into the table.
We’ve had a few sound based projects at the college, the recent being under a theme Local sounds - audio tour of London, in which we got briefed today. So luckily I’ll get to be playing a bit more with audio in the near future. Of course there has previously been occasional moments, such as making animations, when I’ve been using a soundtrack. Not to mention the ambient sounds of this project that we recorded mostly in a moving Central line train.
I’ve already had some initial ideas for this sound guide brief and the next step will be to start experimenting with the recorder. In the mean while I’ve been enjoying this minimalistic interactive sound piece:
This brilliant piece, called Conductor, is based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 design of the New York’s subway map. The designer Alexander Chen explains more about the project in his blog. You can see the whole design in action by heading to mta.me.
