Fashion & Ampersands

A few months ago I worked with Kuchar Swara at DKM Creative to create an identity for an Italian fashion event Firenze&Fashion. The actual evening took place in Florence in mid June. My part of the job was mainly to concentrate on designing the logo that was to be used as a main element for the identity.
Kuchar wanted the theme of the logo to be build around a strong ampersand. For my research I went through many old typography books and type specimens before eventually also remembering a great online resource for nice ampersands called 300&65 ampersands. This blog turned out to be a proper gold mine in terms of variety and quantity of its content (365 ampersands!).
The research really helped a lot in finding possible styles to compare before deciding the different design routes we wanted to go down with. Eventually for this chosen logo I didn’t want to use an existing ampersand, so I ended up drawing one myself. The typeface in the text part is one of my old favourites; the classic Futura by Paul Renner. Being in a proper senior citizen’s age at 84 this typeface still manages to look very contemporary to my eyes — but only if it’s only being used with some appropriate consideration.
For not being present at the actual event it was nice to see some images from it appearing online. Judging by the pictures the venue looked very nice and managed to attract a person or two. The bottom three images are taken from Firenze&Fashion’s Facebook page.
